图书简介
The 2nd Edition will be a major update and revision to reflect the dramatic advances in this field since the 1995 publication of the 1st Edition.  A Scientific American style first chapter will be added (technically accurate and sophisticated but free of equations), by a leading expert (co-editor Fraas), to allow a wider range of readers to understand more of the critical concepts driving the future of this rapidly evolving and complex field. This is important since the most influential decisions, in the coming decades, will likely be made more on economic and financial terms, and less on purely technological terms. Nevertheless, the latter strongly influences which of the many approaches (and which countries), ultimately succeed. The Market Analysis will be moved to Chapter 2, to highlight the dramatic increase in market size of more than a factor of  20 from 1995 to 2006 (from $0.4 billion/yr to $9.7 billion/yr).  Since 2000, the market growth rate (measured in gigawatts/yr) has been  doubling in less than 2 years (similar to Moores Law for computing power).  This trend will be used to predict when electricity produced by solar cells will become a major supplier of US electric generating power (and of the worlds electric generating power that is 4X larger). It will also be used to predict when yearly sales can approach that of the worlds largest energy supplier (Exxon with current $400 billion/yr in sales).  All of the remaining chapters will provide the background for what sets the fundamental limits and for what will provide the best opportunities, for solar cell electricity production.  These will be written by experts in the specific topics of each chapter, selected from pioneering leaders, throughout the world.
