图书简介
This new edition explains the multi-step chemical reactions (for example, carbohydrate metabolism pathways) that occur in biological systems (e.g., within cells and organelles) .?The chemical reactions, location within the cell, structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids (including the enzymes), small molecules (carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, steroids, nucleotides) involved, vitamins and cofactors present, storage of information in DNA and translation into proteins, viruses infecting systems, various protein mechanisms, respiration processes, cellular communication and regulation, transport, defense, and blood coagulation are all discussed in detail. An expanded focus on regulatory pathways and mechanisms has been included in this edition, as current research efforts focus particularly on this area. In contrast to conventional textbooks of biochemistry this book intends to condense important aspects of current knowledge. Its goal is to give concise information on the metabolic sequences in the pathways, the chemistry and enzymology of conversions, the regulation of turnover and the effect of disorders. In this respect it has high importance in the postgenome era especially for systems biology applications. The scope of this book is general biochemistry, encompassing bacteria (and to some extent archaea), plants, yeasts and animals. In a number of cases, the chemistry of the reactions is given in more detail, especially at metabolic key and branching points. Human metabolism, its regulation and disorders as a result of disease is a frequent topic. On the other hand, some chapters are especially devoted to bacterial and plant metabolism. Primary emphasis is placed on graphs. This permits the demonstration of several aspects at the same time: reaction sequences, reversibility of reactions, interconnections, regulation types, major and side reactions, general occurrence or presence only in selected kingdoms etc.?Tbles permit to characterize each individual component of complex systems and their interdependency.?The text supports these presentations and acts as a summary of the data given.
