A traditional description of an EE is a cluster of interrelating actors that co-exist in a common setting and evolve together like creatures in their natural ecosystem. Putting in business words, EEs are coordinated attempts by a set of interdependent actors and factors to establish environments that are conducive to increasing the success of newly established ventures within a particular territory. The EE concept highlights the importance of a supportive community as well as an enabling economic environment for the entrepreneur which includes the broader social and economic environment. Therefore, the level of development of a supportive environment for an EE plays a prominent role in shaping the ecosystem. In this context, the ecosystem includes material resources (funds, equipment, facilities) and human capital that are part of institutional organizations that participate in the ecosystem. The process to develop an ecosystem conducive to entrepreneurship and innovation is still blurry. There have been attempts in many parts of the world, following the iconic success of the Silicon Valley in the United States. Other places in the US have also built sustainable EEs, as Boston’s Route 128, North Carolina’s Research Triangle and Colorado’s Boulder. Nevertheless, the US specific context needs to be taken into account when analysing entrepreneurial ecosystems (EE) in other geographies. Even so, countries with different institutional and cultural structures have also turned into successful achievements considering the strategy of promoting collaborative efforts in a bottom-up approach with the aim of increasing entrepreneurship and innovation at the regional level.
