图书简介
This book is a presentation of survey data harmonization in the social sciences. It discusses ex-ante and ex-post harmonization concepts and methodologies in the context of specific longitudinal and cross-national survey projects they apply to. Although there are obvious differences, including in scope (i.e. what can be harmonized), methods (how to harmonize), and costs between harmonizing at the data collection and processing stages, and harmonizing ex-post, both approaches play important roles for data comparability. They do so individually and in relation to each other. Well-documented ex-ante harmonization procedures inform subsequent ex-post harmonization steps, while lessons learned during ex-post harmonization efforts can aid harmonization decisions in the preparation of new surveys. This book covers both perspectives to offer readers a rounded view on survey data harmonization. The Editors include contributions from sociology, political science, demography, economics, and health and medicine, among others. The Editors aim is to give voice to both discipline-specific and interdisciplinary views on the methodological challenges inherent in harmonization - and how these challenges have been met. Equally important, contributions in this book come not only from Europe and the USA, but also from Africa, a region whose methodology developments feature rarely, if ever, in survey research methodology handbooks.
