Membrane Technology and Applications presents an authoritative overview of separation membranes, their theoretical underpinnings, manufacture and use. This internationally acknowledged text provides a comprehensive overview of separation membranes, their manufacture and their applications. Beginning with a series of general chapters on membrane preparation, transport theory and concentration polarization, the book then surveys several major areas of membrane application in separate chapters. Written in a readily accessible style, each chapter covers its membrane subject thoroughly, from historical and theoretical backgrounds through to current and potential applications. Topics include reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, pervaporation, microfiltration, gas separation and coupled and facilitated transport; chapters on electrodialysis and medical applications round out the coverage. Changes for the new edition include a full revision of the third edition to reflect todays reality with the addition of new material and references as appropriate. In particular: The Theory chapter (#2) will be divided into two parts, Solution-Diffusion and Pore Flow. Reverse Osmosis (#4) will be re-named Reverse Osmosis and Hyperfiltration and reorganized to include more coverage on organic liquid separations. The Ultrafiltration (#6) will include an expansion of the submerged membranes is an area that continues to grow  Pervaporation (#9) remains a process with a great future, just around the corner. I will update and try to shorten. Ion Exchange and Electrodialysis (#10) covers a long list of different small applications with new additions around flow through batteries and capacitive desalination. Chapter on Medical Applications of Membranes will be updated to include a description of the current industry. Other Membrane Processes is a catch all chapter and new topics added will include Osmotic Distillation, Forward Osmosis, etc. A new chapter, The Future, proposing research areas that the author would work on if he were, once again, a 21-year old graduate student. An editing of the reference list from the third edition will occur and more citations to recent work included.
