图书简介
This book is a study of Ben Jonson, seen from the point of view of actors who first performed his plays. Jakub Boguszak focuses on actors’ parts—the scripts that actors of the time would have received, consisting only of lines and cues—breaking Jonson’s seventeen extant plays down into some five hundred discrete part-scripts, and analysing the result. Jonson, an actor as well as a playwright, is shown developing a brand of comedy that relied on the manner in which the actors prepared a new play. ‘The Self-Centred Art’ reveals how Jonson, far from fixated solely on publication, as is so often thought, was shaped by the stage for which he wrote. Consisting of a history of Jonson’s parts and revisions, and a series of case-studies of parts from important Jonson plays, this book presents a new way of understanding not just Ben Jonson, but early modern theatre itself.
