A Companion to American Poetry reflects present debates and topics of interest in American poetry and criticism, highlighting the diversity of both poetic practice and its study. The thirty-seven chapters, broad in their approach, address a range of poets, periods, movements, genres, and/or poetic concepts across American history. The volume is divided into such areas as pre-American poetry, transcendence and its legacies, poetics and identity, transnational poetics, and poetry and the arts. The volume is certain to prompt wide-ranging discussions about poetry and poetry scholarship today and to serve as a springboard for future research in the field.
