图书简介
Domesticating Horror in the Atomic Age argues that the abundance of domestic horror stories in Atomic Age America, found in domestic memoirs, scifi films and TV shows, Silver Age comic books, novels about suburbia, and overpopulation fiction, reveals there is another way of responding to Atomic Age anxieties. Critiquing essentialist notions of normality and naturalness, Domesticating Horror in the Atomic Age offers a narrative of Atomic Age culture that calls into question popular memory’s acceptance of the conformity thesis. It also proposes new methods for critiquing the domestic imperative of the period, exploring the ways disempowerment is connected to the unnatural, and offers a means of imagining futures not dependent on the official narratives of normality. The embrace and proliferation of horror stories in this period function not as a mode that generates anxieties but rather as a response to anxieties already circulating within the American psyche.
