图书简介
Reflecting a wider endeavor to recuperate the distinctive characteristics of the American gothic, this book examines the political and ideological implications of “global ambiguity”, a prevalent narrative phenomenon in nineteenth-century canonical texts. Drawing inspirations from Tzvetan Todorov’s concept of the fantastic, the author defines "global ambiguity" as an aesthetic quality of a narrative where its internal evidence seems to support parallel and mutually exclusive readings. The history of American gothic studies was investigated first, followed by a full analysis of global ambiguity in the works of paragons of American gothic literature - Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry James – and its role in pushing the political and moral agendas of the authors. This research brings gothic aesthetics and politics to bear upon each other, and in doing so, participates in a recent critical trend that merges formal and cultural perspectives in the study of gothic literature. Literary scholars, students and general readers interested in gothic literature or American gothic will find this book innovative and resourceful.
