图书简介
Have you ever wondered whether individuals born in the Year of the Dragon are truly blessed? Or why you can’t find a taxi when you need one? What about the influences that affect housing prices? Kiasunomics explores these issues and more in a light-hearted and easy-to-understand manner, by showing the economic ramifications of individual choices through the lens of Teng, the protagonist of this book. Based on the authors’ research, the book explains the influences and consequences of the decisions made by all of us, using simple economic logic. The book follows the life journey of Teng — from birth to adulthood — and examines how personal decisions as well as those of others have economic implications on daily living. This is evident at the beginning of the book where the decision of Teng’s parents to have him as a Dragon baby affects his education, career and spending in the long haul. The grown-up Teng in later chapters, is a taxi driver who learns that the daily budgeting of finances from many of his taxi-driving friends has proven to be poor financial planning. The story also shows how his purchase of a flat is based on superstitious beliefs, and its location near a choice school and MRT station, which in turn influences prices. This book touches on day-to-day-issues which resonate with Singaporeans from all walks of life. Some of these include how the Goods and Services Tax (GST) pushes Teng and his wife to shop in Johor and what this entails for their savings and Singapore businesses; how the haze or a nearby construction site affected Teng’s water and electricity consumption; and what financial challenges his parents face in their silver years. These are unravelled through the authors’ application of research findings.Kiasunomics brings to light the relevance of research, often seen as esoteric, on our daily life and decision making. It also bears on policy implications, particularly issues on GST, utility consumption and retirement.Key Features: ○ Contextualised to Singapore for local identification, but lends itself to readers from other countries that adopt similar Singaporean practices such as Electronic Road Pricing, GST, and Mass Rapid Transit○ Brings forth ’Economics Made Simple’ to show the relevance of research to our daily lives and help readers understand economics○ Applies Freakonomics’ philosophy to the Singaporean context
