A translation of the French edition, originally published in January 2011, this work is the result of numerous training courses that Dominique Paret has given in companies, and it provides detailed explanations of the design and operation of the FlexRay bus. Comprising five parts and eighteen chapters, the following areas are covered: the FlexRay concept and its communication protocol; the FlexRay physical layer; synchronization and global time and; architecture of a node, components and development aid tools for hardware and software. The first part discusses the time triggered protocols, time triggered communication on CAN and towards high throughput, redundant systems and X-by-wire. The second part discusses the genesis of FlexRay, the problems with real time systems with distributed architecture of FlexRay type, clocks, drifts, jitters and the concepts of rate and offset, and FlexRay protocol. It also looks at access to the medium, scheduling problems, and provides examples of the applications. Part three goes into the FlexRay physical layers and the creation, transmission, medium, topology, transport, and the reception of the FlexRay signal. This part of the book also covers BER, modeling and simulation. Part four discusses synchronization in a network of time division multiple access type FlexRay, and network wakeup, startup, and error management. Part five, the final section, covers architecture of a node, components and development aid tools for hardware and software. The author analyses electroic components, tools for development, integration, analysis and testing for FlexRay systems. He also writes about the implementation of FlexRay communication in the software of automotive logic controllers.
