Because of (1) the huge number of different methods, (2) rapid technical progress in the instrumentation and (3) partly very high instrumentation costs there is a strong demand for a comprehensive guide to solve a particular problem with the best and most economical method. The first edition of this handbook was based on a survey including a questionnaire filled-in by 300 spectroscopists at universities, industries and research institutes.
