This biography draws on the Shelley discoveries of the last fifty years while also building a compelling narrative: it is a book based not upon psychological speculation but on sceptical historical investigation.  Shelley’s was the work of a literary genius whose underlying attitudes (and at times behaviour) remained those of the upper classes; who never wrote for money and who ended up owing (in modern money) around a million pounds.  That was a good reason for him to live abroad: he escaped his creditors, living was cheaper, and he knew he would one day inherit a fortune.  He was a man who - in so far as he had any reputation at all - was known not as a great writer but as an atheist . . . until he drowned at the age of twenty-nine, at the height of his powers.
