The case studies in this book follow a general outline that includes an overview of the case, background information, outside reading, case study details, and exercises that include the plan, execution strategy, and supporting arguments to proceed. Not every case study requires every element of the outline. Some case studies are in a preliminary design stage while others can be developed for a turnover to a contractor, or vendor of equipment. In other cases an individual could execute the solution with little or no resources required. However, in all cases, the user is guided through a process of learning, analysis, application of fundamental principles, planning and execution. Each study is intended to be completed in one week. They may be conducted as individual assignments or completed in a group. The case studies require applications of thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat transfer, mathematics and calculus, computer programming, statistics and business economics.
