Burns and Stalker’s text was a study of organisational change in companies in England and Scotland at the beginning of the electronics revolution in the 1950s. It has often been used as a basis for research in mainstream management academic journals and generally represented as an important theory in popular and long established management text books. Miriam Green argues, through in depth comparisons between the original text and its representations that such representations, fully legitimated in the academy in the UK and the US, are highly contestable and have important consequences for the understanding of change initiatives on the part of practitioners such as managers and consultants.
