This book presents the field comprehensive and in a systematized manner. It guides the reader through basic molecular structures of switches and present their most characteristic features as well as the rationale behind development of the particular classes of compounds. Special attention will be put on the most recently described classes like Stenhouse adducts (DASA), iminium switches, or novel indigoids (hemiindigos, iminothioindoxyls), which were not or just briefly described in the previously issued books. Building on that knowledge, the reader will be then led through important applications of the photochromism in materials. Here, particularly significant topics are photochromic nanoparticles, soft materials, molecular motors and walkers, as well as photomodulation of catalytic systems, storage of light energy, or molecular logics realized with photoswitches. Finally, the attention will be focused on the role of photochromic molecules in biological and biomedical research. There, the energy of light can often cleanly and selectively modulate even very complex living systems without subsequent contamination, and hence enable their understanding at the molecular level, which in inaccessible by more traditional techniques.
