The first half of the book reviews the basic engineering methodology and proceeds with the fundamental concepts of classical control theory. The second half deals with more advanced topics featuring applications to physiology of nonlinear dynamics, parameter estimation methods and adaptive estimation and control. In each chapter, worked examples will be used to illustrate key concepts and methodology. These are followed by reasonably in-depth analyses of selected physiological control models that highlight the topic in question. The reader is encouraged to perform guided experiments with the simulation models provided (using Simulink/Matlab). Rather than providing a comprehensive or exhaustive survey of all physiological control systems, the text focuses on giving the reader an appreciation of how common control principles can be used to characterize a select but broad variety of physiological mechanisms.
