图书简介
The purpose of this new edition is to incorporate new device concepts and novel optoelectronic devices developed since the first edition was published in 1995. The new topics covered in this edition include a brief history of the invention of semiconductor lasers, the Lorentz dipole model and metal plasmas, matrix optics, surface plasma waveguides, and optical ring resonators.  Surface plasmonics and micro-ring resonators have emerged as a new field of research for near field imaging and biophotonics sensing applications.  In light generation, quantum dots have been researched in the last decade for applications in semiconductor lasers and nanophotonics applications.  Also included is the theory of optical gain and absorption in quantum dots and quantum wires, and their applications in semiconductor lasers.  Novel microcavity and photonic crystal lasers, quantum-cascade lasers, and GaN blue-green lasers are exciting research subjects, and they are discussed within the context of advanced semiconductor lasers. High speed modulation of quantum-well and quantum-dot lasers, relative-intensity noise, and integrated electroabsorption modulator-lasers (EML) play important roles in optical communications.  They are presented in the section on the modulation of light. Mid-infrared to far-infrared photodetectors using type-II superlattices are added to illustrate the physics of type-II quantum wells and their important applications in night vision goggles and environmental monitoring.
