图书简介
Coastlines of the world are as diverse as any geological setting on Earth. Beaches and Coasts 2e is an exciting and unique textbook that provides an exhaustive treatment of the worlds different coasts and details the highly varied processes that have shaped them. This book provides the necessary content for teaching a broad coastal geology course. Much of the interest in coasts today is driven by climate change and especially sea-level rise and changing behavior of storms. It is noteworthy that as the vulnerability of beaches to erosion and storm impacts increases, the real estate value of coastal property continues to skyrocket. Even after storms completely override coastal communities, such as Dauphine Island on the Alabama coast where hurricanes in 2004 and 2005 knocked down nine out of ten houses, property owners rebuilt the entire area within a few years. One of the major focuses of the new edition is to better educate students and readers about the sustainability of coast and coastal environments. Likewise, more than half of the worlds major cities are located along the coast, e.g. New York, Cairo, Buenos Aires, Dhaka, Mumbai, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Venice, Lagos, Jakarta, etc. and will be at severe risk during the next 50 to 100 years. This new edition emphasizes the future susceptibility of coast to climate driven stresses and decreasing sediment supplies. Managing our coasts is extremely complex and important. Each chapter will consider various aspects of coastal management that are and/or that need to be undertaken.
