This book focuses on model predictive control (MPC) for industrial power electronics with the emphasis being put on three-phase ac-dc and dc-ac power conversion systems for high-power applications in the range of one megawatt (MW) and more. These systems are based on multi-level voltage source converters that operate at switching frequencies below 1 kHz. The book mostly considers medium-voltage (MV) variable speed drive systems, but the proposed control techniques can be also applied to MV grid-connected converters and to low-voltage power converters when operated at low pulse numbers. The MPC methods address the control and modulation problem in one computational stage and thus replace the traditionally used current control loop and modulator. By adopting MPC schemes with long prediction horizons, excellent steady-state performance as well as very fast response times during transients can be achieved. The research vision underlying this book is to combine the benefits of deadbeat control methods (such as direct torque control) and off-line computed optimized pulse patterns (OPP), by resolving the antagonism between the two, thus achieving fast control at very low switching frequencies and harmonic distortions.
